3 positive benefits of group lessons

3 positive benefits of group lessons

Anytime I get a new inquiry from a parent or student, my go to recommendation is starting them off with private lessons and then moving them to group lessons if they wish. That being said, lately I’ve been taking on new students and starting them off in group lessons. I’ve noticed a ton of positive benefits. Let’s take a look at what those are.

1. More Social Interaction

Private lessons are great, but let’s face it, they can feel isolating and boring after a while. In group lessons, there’s more opportunity to interact with other students, have a laugh and share the same frustrations that your going through together.

2. More Accountability

In group lessons, students learn a new concept every week therefore if they didn’t work on it, you can bet that they will hear it from their teacher and the other students in the class. This naturally makes them more accountable to practice to impress their other classmates and teacher during the lesson.

3. More Competition

Being overly competitive isn’t always good, but a healthy dose of it during music lessons is great in my opinion. Often when i’m teaching a group lesson, I’ll have one of my students try a piece of music and then get another student to try it afterwards. You can bet that the other student will want to try to play it as good or better then the first student. The whole point of this is, it gives the students motivation to get better which results in them becoming better musicians.
